Welcome to CETAPS Talks, a series of biannual discussions hosted by the Centre for English, Translation, and Anglo-Portuguese Studies (CETAPS) in Lisbon. We are thrilled to offer a unique opportunity for you to engage with leading experts in the fields of English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies and related subjects. Each session will feature a distinguished speaker, who will share his or her knowledge and perspectives, followed by an interactive debate allowing attendees to exchange ideas and ask questions.

‘Just as exotic as we are’
Gaston Dorren is the acclaimed author of several books on languages, including Lingo and Babel, examples of language travelogues. Gaston Dorren's lecture will focus on how we perceive languages from around the world. He will show how the linguistic diversity in Europe is really very limited compared to the linguistic diversity worldwide; moreover, he will explain the concept of “linguistic culture” and how it is important to understand our own culture and our relationship with others. He will also also talk about linguistic diversity being endangered and what our attitude and response to that should be.
The session is free and open to everyone.
